Maximum Heights

There are a few instances where maximum height rules comes into play when installing solar in Oregon.

Disconnect Switch

  • In Oregon, the installation height requirements for the center of a disconnect switch are based on the 2023 Oregon Electrical Specialty Code (OESC), which incorporates the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) along with state-specific amendments. According to the OESC, the center of the operating handle of a disconnect switch should not exceed 6 feet 7 inches (2.0 meters) above the floor, platform, or grade level. This guideline is consistent with NEC 404.8(A).

[The measurement is taken from the “floor,” “platform,” or “grade level.” These terms are defined as follows:
  • Floor: The surface within a building or structure that is designed to be walked on.
  • Platform: An elevated horizontal surface, often a raised floor or area where the equipment is installed, intended for walking or working.
  • Grade Level: The surface of the ground surrounding a building or the specific area where the equipment is installed. This could be natural soil or a prepared surface like concrete, asphalt, or gravel.]
